Helping You Build Relationships
6 Apr

Bear with me for a minute as I’d like to quote one of my kid’s absolute favorites – Dr. Suess’ Oh, the Places You’ll Go:
“You’ll get mixed up, of course,
as you already know.
You’ll get mixed up
with many strange birds as you go.
So be sure when you step.
Step with care and great tact
and remember that Life’s
a Great Balancing Act.
Just never forget to be dexterous and deft.
And never mix up your right foot with your left.”
In my opinion we are living in an extremely complex (and stressful) period of American history – the recession, new leadership, downfall of “Corporate America” as we once knew it, financial turmoil, etc. Adding to these complexities, here we are communicating in so many different ways including the relatively new social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook.
It hit me last week as I was laying with my 3-year old in his bed reading him this Dr. Suess favorite…life truly is a great balancing act. In fact, today we are likely balancing our day-to-day tasks and challenges while riding the unicycle (in a proverbial sense).
As a business owner, serial philanthropist, husband and father I often come to the crossroads of this great balancing act each and every day around 4:45 p.m. In fact, I often here this song by The Clash playing in my head everyday at this time – Should I Stay or Should I Go
.
I’m very proud to say that I figured out at a very early age in my career, marriage and since beginning fatherhood that we all must maintain a healthy work/life balance…despite everything that surrounds us today.
I’ll be leaving work today at 5:00 p.m. as I try and do everyday. To spend the final waking hours with my two young boys…perhaps reading them a little Dr. Suess as they doze off around 7:30 or 8:00 p.m. I’m good like that.

What do you do to help manage your work/life balance? I’d love to do a follow-up post listing out all of the great ideas and suggestions. Thanks!
Matt

6 Responses for "Prioritizing Life’s Great Balancing Act"
Matt, this post is a great reminder as I spent the last two weeks working days, nights and weekends. One of the reasons I started my own business was so I could have a better balance between work and the other things I enjoy – and although in this business we have to pull the long hours sometimes, I strive to make sure we are still enjoying ourselves and taking care of our health by saving time for the gym, running, or whatever my team likes to do. As long as the work is done I don’t rank dedication on hours worked but on quality of output and thinking. I don’t think a sweatshop fosters good feelings about a job or workplace. Hopefully we all continue to stay excited and motivated if we take care of our personal needs as well!
We’ve chatted via Twitter a bit about this in the past too but I couldn’t agree more with on setting your priorities and finding whatever balance means to you. It’s such a priority for me to be home while my daughter is up so we can be together. I’ve taken some steps back from what was probably a more lucrative/flashy career path to allow me freedom to be the person I want to be in terms of a dad and husband. My daughter won’t want me around all the time, but right now she does and she needs a dad a lot more than a good PR guy.
Our particular careers as communications pros often put us on other people’s schedules, and that’s o.k. too. It can be energizing to do work you enjoy. But if you don’t take some time to think about balance and your ideal mix, I guarantee you’ll never find it.
Good post Matt-
Dave
Thanks for posting this, Matt.
This has been an issue I’ve been thinking about as I embark on my own career and your words definitely help put things in perspective.
One thing I try to do to manage this balance is to separate work from home. I do work at work (or homework in the library) so that my time at home is just that, my time.
Thanks again,
Tom

I try to remind myself of the balancing act regularly, so thanks for being the proverbial string on my finger this week.
Almost 5 years ago I went in to business for myself so I would stop spending nights and weekends tied to a computer and being at my employer’s beck and call. I had spent the previous 10 years working long hours, traveling often and not taking care of myself.
Working from home can sometimes make it difficult to “turn off”, but my non-techie husband really helps me stay “in check.” He doesn’t take to kindly to me being on the computer 24/7, so it’s a little easier to not get tied to the machine too long (especially when he gets home at 3 PM).
But, probably the biggest difference I made and continue to do is pile my two dogs in the car each morning and spend an hour at the beach. Running and playing, and taking pictures, with no phone, sets the tone for the day. In the afternoon a few times a week I also go for swim.
On the rare day I don’t make it to beach and/or the pool, I can tell the difference immediately. I may spend more time at my computer on those days, but I don’t think I get nearly as much done.. or as well.
Matt, I too am in a constant struggle to balance my life between work, family and personal time such as working out and finding a creative outlet.
I’m constantly asking myself: “What will they remember most?” Will my kids recall the mom who was constantly checking her iPhone for emails, or the mom who took the time to make homemade breakfasts, go for bike rides and garden with them?
On beautiful sunny days, I often deny myself the chance to take a break outside. I realize the insanity of staying in work mode when I really need to stop and enjoy my beautiful outdoor surroundings.
During work days, it’s hard to turn off the auto-pilot. I hate that. I also am having difficulty figuring exercise into my daily routine. No I’m not totally balanced when it comes to life and work.
Even though I’ve set my priorities, I often have to remind myself what they are.
